2026-10-05 00:40:02

Model Overview

The MG4 Electric (marketed domestically in China as the MG4 EV) is a global all-electric model developed under SAIC Motor's MG marque, built on the dedicated SAIC Nebula pure electric systematic platform and positioned as an all-electric compact hatchback. The car has undergone several iterations in its home market: an all-new generation model debuted at the Chengdu Motor Show in August 2025 with a significantly lengthened body, followed by the official launch of the 2026 MG4 during the Beijing Auto Show in April 2026. The new lineup comprises six variants with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM68,800 to RM102,800, alongside limited-time subsidised launch prices starting from as low as RM65,800 to RM99,800. Notably, compared with earlier rear-wheel-drive iterations, the 2025 model and subsequent updates underwent major revisions in drivetrain configuration and suspension layout, sparking widespread discussion across the market.

Design Language

Early iterations of the MG4 EV embraced the brand's "Dynamic Design Aesthetics", featuring exterior dimensions of 4,287 × 1,836 × 1,516 mm and a wheelbase of 2,705 mm. The 2025 generational redesign saw the body substantially lengthened to 4,395 × 1,842 × 1,551 mm with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, firmly positioning it as an A-segment compact car. The updated front end sports a blanked-off grille flanked by redesigned LED headlamp clusters, along with an illuminated LED front badge that delivers sharp night-time visual recognition. The 2026 model adds two fresh exterior paint options—Ice Crystal Blue and Almond Beige—paired with a contrasting black floating roof and 17-inch star-spoke alloy wheels to deliver a more youthful stance. Inside, the cabin offers various colourways such as Rose Purple, Daishan Blue, and Starry Night Purple; the dashboard features concealed air vents, a heated two-spoke steering wheel, a column-mounted electronic gear selector, and a 50W wireless smartphone charging pad integrated into the lower centre console.

Drivetrain and Performance

The powertrain lineup of the MG4 Electric marks a distinct departure across generations. Early variants offered a single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup as well as an XPOWER dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) flagship, with RWD outputs spanning 125 kW to 150 kW, while the XPOWER pumped out a combined 315 kW for a blistering 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.8 seconds. Following the 2025 generational update, the model pivoted to a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout across the board, standard with a 120 kW front-mounted single electric motor that produces 250 Nm of peak torque and a top speed of 160 km/h. For driving range, the updated model is equipped with either 42.8 kWh or 53.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, delivering CLTC ranges of 437 km and 530 km respectively, alongside an efficient energy consumption rating as low as 10.4 kWh/100 km. DC fast charging allows a 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) top-up in approximately 20 minutes. The range-topping 2026 flagship variant is fitted with a mass-produced semi-solid-state battery boasting an energy density of 180 Wh/kg, capable of retaining up to 75% of its rated range in cold weather conditions down to -7°C.

Chassis and Handling

The chassis architecture represents the most talked-about shift in the evolution of the MG4 Electric. The early MG4 EV featured front MacPherson struts paired with a rear five-link independent suspension, which, combined with the rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout, earned it a reputation as an "electric hot hatch", further complemented by the Super XDS cornering control system on the Overseas Champion Edition to sharpen its handling prowess. Following the 2025 redesign, the drive layout transitioned to front-wheel drive (FWD), while the rear suspension was revised to a torsion beam non-independent setup. While this change helped curb production costs and expand rear passenger space, it predictably softened the car's enthusiast handling credentials. The 2026 model comes standard with the VMC high-speed tyre-blowout stability control system, which detects and intervenes to stabilise vehicle attitude within 300 milliseconds of a blowout; it has successfully cleared extreme trial tests, including a 160 km/h straight-line diagonal two-wheel blowout and an 80 km/h mountain bend diagonal blowout test. The chassis was co-tuned by Sino-European engineering teams and subjected to 1,000 hours of complex operational endurance tests across two full winter and summer test cycles in extreme climates.

Cabin and Features

The digital cockpit adopts a dual-screen layout, featuring a floating touchscreen infotainment display measuring between 10.25 and 15.6 inches, alongside a 7.0- to 8.88-inch full digital instrument cluster depending on the variant. The onboard infotainment architecture has progressed through two stages: earlier units ran on the Zebra Venus 2.0 system with 90-second continuous voice commands, regional dialect recognition, and Alibaba ecosystem support; the 2026 model features an intelligent cockpit deeply customised with OPPO, powered across the range by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor with full-app voice control, wireless Apple CarPlay, and multi-OS smartphone integration across Huawei, Apple, and Android platforms. Mid-to-high-spec variants feature front seats equipped with heating, ventilation, eight-point massage, and memory settings, alongside a dedicated "Nap Mode" that links seat recline with ambient lighting at the push of a button. The boot offers a standard cargo volume of 471 litres with a practical three-tier storage layout, expanding significantly when the rear bench is folded flat.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Structural and electronic safety remains a defining competitive strength for the vehicle. The MG4 Electric achieved a full five-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash testing across the range. It incorporates Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery-chassis integration technology, delivering a torsional rigidity of 31,000 Nm/deg while cutting collision-induced battery compartment deformation by 50%. For battery safety, the "Zero Thermal Runaway Battery" has passed eight stringent industry stress tests, including nail penetration, open fire, and water immersion; under severe collision scenarios, the battery can automatically isolate from the vehicle body within 0.3 seconds to eliminate short-circuit hazards. Active safety is equally thorough, with the 2026 lineup packing 14 standard ADAS functions, including Forward/Reverse Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB), and AI blind-spot camera feeds; the 437 Smart Edition and higher trims are equipped with Level 2+ (L2+) driver assistance capabilities, supporting Highway Navigation On Autopilot (NOA) and full-scenario automated parking.

Market Performance and Reception

The MG4 Electric stands as one of the quintessential benchmark export models among Chinese automotive marques. Between January and July 2023, the car topped the charts as China's most exported electric vehicle, while simultaneously claiming the top sales spot among all-electric compact hatchbacks in Europe. Over the first eight months of 2023, cumulative European deliveries reached 46,000 units, expanding its footprint across more than 30 global markets. The model has garnered widespread critical acclaim, securing prestigious titles including "Compact Car of the Year" in Germany, "Car of the Year 2023" in the UK, and "Electric Car of the Year" in France, achieving a rare Car of the Year "Grand Slam" across the UK, France, and Germany, alongside nearly 60 global automotive accolades. In its domestic market, the 2025 model recorded monthly deliveries exceeding 10,000 units for six consecutive months, with the 2026 iteration sustaining that monthly 10,000-unit milestone for seven consecutive months. Nevertheless, the transition from an agile, rear-wheel-drive hot hatch to a family-oriented front-wheel-drive daily runabout drew mixed reactions from driving enthusiasts, with some noting that its dynamic sharpness is no longer what it used to be. Overall, from leading European sales charts to building steady volume at home, the MG4 Electric remains a pivotal, milestone EV in the global expansion of Chinese automotive brands.
